Predatorstuff Reviews Narin’s Death Warrior Predator Kit!

September 14th, 2009

If you collect Predator kits or have any interest in the kit world and dig Predators, it’s highly likely that you’ve already seen the AMAZING Death Warrior either on this site or on the forums…  today I want to share with you the awesome build-up version by Joe Dunaway that was recently featured in the latest issue of KitBuilders Magazine!

Before I get to some serious rambling, I wanted to apologize for the long wait for a new review or even a post… mid-August and September is ragweed season here in Montreal and that’s when my allergies go full on insane and I was pretty much on my ass for 2 weeks and a bit.  The meds have finally taken control though, so I was finally able to get some work done!  OK, let’s do it…

When it comes to Predator kits, this is pretty much as good as it gets… flawless castings, insane details and an amazing pose, all topped off with a “super duper Joe Dunaway special” in the paint department.  Before we get too far in to the review, let me just quickly explain the difference between this release and the average Narin kit.  Typically, Narin sculpts a piece for a producer, sends the sculpt in to them and then never sees it again… the producer then molds the piece and sells castings and retains ownership of the piece unless they sell the rights.  BUT, about once a year Narin sculpts, molds and produces a kit himself and these are known as Narin Series kits.  Series 1 and 2 were the small scale Spearaizor Barbarian and Seated Axertor kits (both are retired kits now) and the Death Warrior is Series 3, which was released last summer 2008.  We also have a brand new release that started shipping a few months ago, that piece is Series 4 and is called the Bad Blood (stay tuned next week for a review of the BB kit!).  What really makes these kits stand out is their outstanding sculpt detail and castings.  Narin kits are usually cast very well, but his direct series pieces are cast in a very high quality resin and are extremely clean, usually requiring next to no cleanup prior to painting.

The Death Warrior is a limited release of 99 kits and each kit is stamped with the issue number on the back.  Please note that ALL 99 are sold out, so if you see these in a shop or on eBay, chances are it’s a recast so buyer beware!  This kit also retailed for $424.99, so again, if you see it online for $150, it’s a recast so avoid at all costs.  The kit itself is cast in a peach colored resin with clear resin mandibles, allowing you to give them a translucent effect when you build them up.  Each base was also signed by Narin and included a full instruction booklet that was also signed.  All 59 parts are solid resin, and when assembled, the kit stands just over 16 inches tall and looks COMPLETELY badass!  This kit is easily Narin’s most successful kit produced to date and is now next to impossible to find.   For anyone who has this kit or has seen it in person, you can easily understand why, the detail is simply ridiculous and despite the high retail price, it’s worth it.

This build-up was done by the master of Predators, Joe Dunaway at www.modelzone.com, and he put together a full build article that was published in the recently released issue #62 of KitBuilders Magazine.  If you want to get a glimpse of how Joe goes about customizing and painting his kits or to get ideas on how to build your own Predators, I highly recommend you go pick up a copy of the magazine.  You can subscribe directly or purchase just this issue on their website at www.kitbuildersmagazine.com.  The kit itself includes the insane looking Predator holding his massive spear/axe weapon in one hand and the head of a recently expired alien in the next while perched on top of 2 more alien corpses and a tail coiled up his leg.  Joe dialed it up a notch and went all out with the customization for the article, adding the following items: Face and arm quills (made with porcupine quills), plasma cannon and wiring, arm blade gauntlet and blades, dead facehugger, skulls hanging from his armor and weapon, chains and loops all over the place, a dagger around his waist, a bandolier made of real lizard bones (made from a lizard that died and Joe buried years ago… ew) and additional loops on the dreads.  I shudder to think of how long it took to drill all those holes.  It’s important to note that Joe predrills everything BEFORE he starts the painting process… I find it amazing that he previsualizes the placement of all the chains and loops so far in advance with such precision.  If you think about that for a minute, there’s no way you can deny just how good Joe is at this stuff.  Reminds me of the expert chess player who plays with his next 8 moves already planned.

Joe goes through a lot of trouble to document the process and many photos are provided in the magazine of the build in progress.  You can also check the gallery at the end of this article, I took a TON of photos and many are super close up macro shots so you can see the detail work on this kit from all angles.

What more can we say that has not already been said about the amazing skills of both Narin and Joe Dunaway?  The Death Warrior is the ultimate in sculpting skills and product quality, you simply don’t get any better than this from anywhere in the kit world and Narin continues to stun fans with pieces like this.  Then we have Joe showing us how you can add so many elements to a kit to give it it’s own personality, not to mention how you can find customization fodder in the strangest places, from the wild kingdom to the arts and craft area at Walmart.

Before we get in to the viewable media I’ve put together for this review, I would like to touch on the recasting issue one last time.  This is a very expensive kit and I would hate like hell for anyone to pay $400 for this and get a recast.  Here are some tips on what you need to look for to avoid getting ripped off on a recast:

1. ALL DW kits are numbered… the recasts will either have no number stamped in the back or they will be numbered 61, 62, 63, 64 or 65. Those are the numbers of the kits purchased by the person that recast the kits. (They were sold directly by Narin to a third party, they were not sold by myself.. needless to say Narin is piiiiiiiiiiissed)

2. Second, original DW kits are cast in a very unique resin with a peach color to it… the recasts are white or a light cream color.

3. The lower and upper mandibles are CLEAR. Only two kits were provided with solid colored mandibles as requested by the collector. Both are CH members so you know who you are. Example of the peach color of an original and clear mandibles: CLICK HERE

4. All original DW kits also include a small instruction manual booklet printed on a thick cream colored paper and includes a color photo of the kit. The recasts won’t have those items.

5. The DW is completely sold out… any online stores selling these are selling recasts unless they happen to be selling their personal copy.

I’ve put together quite a bit of photos and goodies for this piece.. it’s clearly one of my favorites to date and there is just so much detail to look at, it’s impossible not to take a ridiculous amount of photos of it.  Before we get in to the photos however, I do want to share with you the video review I put together of this beauty, as promised months ago when I posted that little teaser video with all the close ups a few months ago.  So without further yammering, you can check out the new video in HD by clicking HERE or click on the YouTube icon below:

Video Available on YouTube!

I spent HOURS photographing this piece, there was just so much to show off!  I shot about 200 photos and decided on about 60 to keep for the gallery, which is easily the most photos I’ve put together for any review by about double!  So clickety click the icon below and enjoy (the photos I took at the ones named dw_xx.jpg).

For those of you that have taken the time to watch my video reviews, you may have noticed that I typically do my reviews from my office desk and that in the background, I have a wallpaper of the item I am reviewing on my monitor.  Well, a bunch of you have been asking me to make these wallpapers available, so here they are!  I’ll gradually make older ones available from previous reviews, but I figured I would start with 3 news ones I made from this review, even though I actually filmed the review from a different spot this time lol!  Hope you like them!

That’s it for this review guys, thanks so much for reading and I hope you enjoyed it!  I want to thank Narin for putting together such a gorgeous piece for us pred-heads and of course Joe for pimping up such an amazing version of this kit for me.  I’d also like to thank Kitbuilders Magazine for publishing a super sweet build article on this piece, I’m sure a TON of fellow kit builders will get a lot of use from Joe’s write-up.  If you have any questions or concerns about this kit or anything else you see on the site, please don’t hesitate to contact me.  I also invite anyone to post their feedback on this piece by clicking on the comment icon below and sharing your thoughts.

Thanks again guys and enjoy!
Dan

What gives? Every time I try to vitis Kitbuilders website, Issue #62 isn’t available. I’ve emailed twice AND called and still no word back… It’s starting to look like I’m just not meant to get my own copy… *sniffles*

Hey Justin 🙂 I just got off the phone with Dan at KBM and he told me they were a bit behind on emails and such but were getting all caught up ASAP so you should hear from him pretty soon.

The mag isn’t in the back issues yet because it just came out. It will be added eventually, but you should hear from Dan or Barb long before that happens 🙂

  3. Justin Says:

Dan, you are the man. I appreciate the support here, lol. I’d all but lost hope, I’m dying to get my hands on a copy. What with seeing this thing, and Joe’s paint up of the Bad Blood, I’m hoping to clean ANY sort of info out of the mag that I can to get my kits looking even REMOTELY like Joe’s buildups! Thanks a lot, Dan, I appreciate you following up like that, that means a lot. Good to have someone solid having your back, lol. Great review on a great piece, by the way. You’re a lucky man!
