Predatorstuff Reviews the Sideshow Collectibles Exclusive Edition Predator 2 Diorama!

March 2nd, 2009

Good afternoon everyone, today I am pleased to present to you a little review of the new Sideshow Collectibles Exclusive Edition Predator 2 Diorama that just arrived to me this morning! It’s a great piece with only a few minor flaws typical of prepaints and one surprise re-pose that Sideshow “forgot” to mention to us. So without further ado, I give you… MY REVIEW!

Posed upon the pedestal carved to represent the spectacular penthouse scene in Predator 2, our hunter is crouched, laying in wait with one arm extended… you can hear his growl and make out the deadly words he spews forth, sounding like bone against steel. “PASS! I’M OPEN!! PASS THE BALL!!!” Ah yes, Sideshow finally ships the much waited Predator 2 Diorama, which was first unveiled during the San Diego Comic Con last summer 2008 and was received with overwhelming applause from the collector community. My friend Joe Dunaway and I remarked that the pose seems a bit strange, with one arm sticking out and two fingers extended and though he was pointing down the street as he gave out directions to tourists, indicating the nearest Starbucks or perhaps the local McDs. Either way, we had lots of time to get used to the pose and look forward to what appeared to be a gorgeous follow-up to the Predator 1 diorama.

Photos are posted on the Sideshow site, they post the usual promo videos and all is well… last week the piece starts shipping, and even the retail boxes show the same pose with out helpful hunter pointing the way. So you can imagine our surprise when we open the box to find that the entire arm has been re-posed, with his palm now facing forward as though he’s waving to an unseen friend while screaming for the football. As you can expect, this completely unannounced switcharoo has caused quite an uproar with many collectors and has pissed a few people off something awful. Personally I don’t care THAT much, and I only bring this up as yet another example of what appears to be an increase in Sideshow changing their products unfavorably and shipping them off to clients with ZERO notice. If anyone over there at Sideshow is listening, you guys seriously need to smarten up and stop deviating so heavily from your prototypes, this is starting to get stupid. What I find even more disturbing is that they are choosing these tough economic times to piss off their valuable customer base, is that really a smart thing to be doing?! Iron Man was a pooch screw, Moria Orc was a joke, the CM Predator has been a QC nightmare… This is NOT the way to survive an economic downturn, although they are DEFINITELY helping me save my money because I am cancelling orders like crazy lately.

All ranting aside though, the Predator 2 Diorama does have this unannounced re-pose but luckily does not destroy the piece for me and I’ve seen some collectors pull off a BRILLIANT move by simply gluing a skull in to his hand and it looks AWESOME! You can simply use hot glue and it won’t damage the paint when you want to remove the skull.

The Exclusive Edition is made up of the following parts:

– Black base with the Predator 2 logo painted on with raised lettering
– Wall mountable Pedestal
– Main body section
– Combi-Stick, which includes the hand and gauntlet as all one piece and attaches at the elbow via the use of magnets
– Plasma Cannon
– Masked Head (This is the standard head that comes with the regular version and exclusive)
– Exclusive Unmasked Head

The entire statue assembled weighs in at 6 lbs of solid polystone and measures 11.5″ in height. Martin Canale and the boys at Sideshow did a fantastic job on the sculpt, it’s gorgeous! On the P1 Diorama I thought the unmasked head looked a little off but the P2 unmasked head looks awesome and I’d definitely use that pose for display purposes. The detailing on the armor is also beautifully done, with intricate sculpting on every inch of the piece. The skin and netting is also well sculpted and very neat, no sloppy mesh lines!

The paint on the other hand has it’s issues, but that’s to be expected with a prepaint. Actually, before I harp on the paint, I should mention that I am extremely impressed with the application of the head pattern markings, it looks fantastic! Overall the skin tones also look great and from 5 feet away the piece looks pretty much as good as some of the professional kit buildups I have in my collection. Upon closer inspection though, you start to notice a couple of problems… the biggest of which is the completely forgotten paint on the mouth. Honestly, it looks like they forgot to paint it! I know this is a common issue because all the photos other collectors have posted on the forums have the same problem. The interior of the mouth, the teeth and mandibles are all the same skin color, and that’s a big oops as far as I’m concerned. There is what appears to be a bit of a reddish wash that was applied inside the mouth, but that looks more like someone accidentally spilled a drop of coffee inside the mouth rather than some sort of paint application. Had they nailed the mouth as effectively as the rest of the statue, this statue would have been near perfect in the paint department. To be honest, this is a bigger issue to me than the re-posed hand.

The other small issue is the random black dots on the face, especially the front of the face. I’m not sure what they used for reference material, but the P2 head definitely doesn’t have beauty marks all over the front of his face. Mine actually doesn’t have that many, but I’ve seen some that bordered on looking like some kind of inter-galactic skin infection in serious need of a dermatologist. The fact that the sculpt and the paint patterns on the top of the head are so well done really saves the unmasked head, but it would have been KILLER had the mouth received a bit more attention.

Aside from that, the paint looks great, especially on the armor. Skin seems to be harder to paint than armor because pretty much every single Predator statue from Sideshow has AWESOME finishes on the armor, but the skin is consistently so-so.

By the way, I know this might sound silly but the spear is nice and straight… this is a SERIOUS pet peeve of mine from the figure days… I HATE CROOKED WEAPONS! Plastic spears and blades that are warped drive me insane, so if you’re one of those bent spear haters, have no fear, the combi stick on this guy is also polystone, solid and straight as an arrow. The blades are made of a softer plastic material, and considering that I already managed to hook myself on one of them and it didn’t snap off, I’ll go ahead and say that’s a good thing! They’re also not warped or weird looking, so I’m happy with that. Another area I tend to be picky about are the eyes, and once again I am happy to report that they are well painted and centered. So great job on my usual pet peeves, looks like Sideshow has them all covered on this round!

Overall this piece looks AWESOME and should be a welcomed addition to anyone’s Predator collection. You can expect a good overall paint application and a GORGEOUS sculpt as well as pose as long as you add a skull to his hand. My only gripes are the lack of paint in the mouth, the beauty marks on the face and the small 1:6 scale that is standard with all the dioramas. I know, I know.. stupid complaint because we all complain about space, but I wish someone would finally get a good sized P2 style Maquette out to us. I still think a companion P2 piece to go with our Sideshow P1 Maquettes would ROCK! COME ON SIDESHOW!

VIDEO UPDATE – The video review is now uploaded on YouTube so you can check that out by clicking here! (Remember to click on the “watch in high quality” link under the video if available) The videos shows both head poses, closeups of the sculpt and assembly and more. It also features my sexy voice… and we all know that Dan does whatever a sexy man can! I think. Right?

What kind of review would this be without some pics?! As always, I broke out the lights and camera and snapped a variety of shots for your viewing pleasure. I actually wanted to do something different today instead of the usual lightbox shots. Today I set up right in the middle of my office floor with my display case as the backdrop and natural soft light coming in through the window (It’s cloudy and snowing today). Click the photo icon below for all the new photos – please note that the pics named “p2review0x.jpg” are mine:

Now this particular piece does look rather cool albeit with a few awkward points. Personally, I’m not so sure I’m a fan of the base. Obviously the idea for the stand came from the penthouse/hotel scene. I’d much rather have seen the Predator atop the slaughterhouse building, Or perhaps perched upon the gargoyle as he was spying on Harrigan.
