Batman: Dead End… Predatorstuff looks at this cult classic short film and we’ve got the screen-used Big Red bio up for grabs!

September 19th, 2007

Over the years there have been many fanfilms based on the Predator franchise, but at SDCC 2003, Sandy Collora made history when he premiered his Batman: Dead End film on July 19th. It became a MASSIVE sensation to Predator fans everywhere and has since been featured all over the internet and is talked about even to this day. In fact, several of my personal collection pieces have been customized to resemble the infamous Red Samurai Predator seen at the end of the film, otherwise know as Big Red!

Batman: Dead End

Written and directed by Sandy Collora and starring Clark Bartram as Batman and Andrew Koenig as the Joker, this strange mix of Alien, Predator and Batman was released as a short but action packed film to showcase the skills of Collora Studios. Film director and comic book writer Kevin Smith called it “possibly the truest, best Batman movie ever made.” Comic book artist Alex Ross praised it as “Batman the way I’ve always wanted to see him.” People went NUTS for this movie, which cost a rumored $30,000 to film!

If you have never seen BDE, you have GOT to check this out ASAP and like the rest of us, get hooked! You can watch it for free at www.collorastudios.com as well as catch some behind-the-scenes photos and more. I also have a MASSIVE collection of BDE footage in the gallery.

For many people, especially the Predator fans, the most amazing and captivating part of this film was the appearance of what was then an astonishing take on Predator lore and armor configuration. It was a Samurai style Predator decked out in bright red armor! He became known as the Big Red or the Red Samurai Predator and one of his most prized possessions was the gorgeous tribal style helmet he wore, inset with 2 glowing orbs.

Batman: Dead End

People went NUTS for this helmet and suddenly reproductions were being done up left, right and center and many prop makers worked as hard as they could to duplicate the recipe that cooked up this unique piece. Sandy also received MANY offers to purchase the helmet, but it remained in his private collection until very recently. In fact, I was one of those guys that fell in love with the suit and I too badgered Sandy 2 years ago for the helmet and he wouldn’t sell it!

We finally asked him what he used to make the bio, especially those green orbs. Here’s what he had to say:

I would have never in a million years, thought back in 1989, sitting in Stan Winston Studios, designing on Predator 2, when I was actually doing that drawing, that not only more than 10 years later, would I go on to direct a short film with that character in it, but that there would be an eager, talented, group of people, somewhere in cyberspace, having a detailed discussion about what I used for the spheres on the helmet, so they could make one…

That just trips me out more than you guys will ever know. It really does… and THAT is the magic of this place. Regardless of all the bickering, back and forth, or what have you, the glue, or binder if you will, that holds this place together is the dedication of all the people here to this incredibly captivating creature known as the Predator…

For all of those who’d like to know… The two spheres on Red’s helmet are actually solid, plexiglass half domes. The bigger one is 1 and 1/8 inches, and the smaller one is 1/2 inch. The backs of them are painted with Delta Ceramcoat paint, in Lima Green. They were then glued onto the helmet and washed a bit with some watered down lamp black, Liquitex acrylic.

Mystery solved.

And now ladies and gentlemen, as destiny would have it, laying next to me is that very same screen-used red bio, complete with a hand drawn COA and autographed photos from Sandy Collora himself, and I am offering this in our shop in this exclusive sale! Now let me be the first to say I am not in a hurry to sell this piece of history, so please don’t contact me asking for special prices or to hold it for you or anything along these lines. It’s in the shop and can be bought at any time, but if it doesn’t sell, trust me I won’t be heart broken about it. BUT, rest assured whoever gets this will have one of the most amazing Predator pieces ever made as part of their collection. If you would like to get your hands on this one-of-a-kind screen used prop, you can buy it from our shop at www.predatorstuff.com/shop/. This includes the COA that was made by Sandy and I welcome any seriously interested buyers to contact me for information should you wish to verify that this is indeed the real deal.

For those of you that would like to check out some additional photos of this beauty, click the icon below for some studio shots of this amazing helmet:

I also have some great shots of the actor wearing the suit during production… you can see those in the BDE gallery here.

So that’s it guys, check out the movie if you’ve never seen this before and for anyone looking for this rare original piece, you can grab it from the shop right now.

Enjoy!
Dan

PS. Due to fear of replication and people trying to sell fakes, I am keeping the COA private and it will only be given to the buyer of the helmet. Anyone concerned with the authenticity of this item will be provided contact information for Sandy Collora himself so this item can be verified.
